Mountain lions are extraordinary predators, it's said that they can take down at least one mule deer a week. That's why Mike's doing his part and heading to Utah to fill a mountain lion tag.
It's time for our annual turkey hunt. First up is Uncle Randy in Illinois.
Kids today have more avenues for entertainment than ever before, video games, cell phones, all sorts of electronics keep them from enjoying the outdoors. This can make recruiting new hunters harder than ever. Mike's always tried to keep his kids involved in the outdoors, from gun safety, to conservation practices, there's a whole lot more that goes into teaching a youngster about hunting than just shooting an animal, it's about the experience. It's about what you learn. There's just more to it than killing that deer.
In Texas the season is always open for anything from hogs to axis deer, but during December whitetail hunting is definitely the priority.
Every year when summer rolls around Mike heads to Texas to hunt axis deer. Mike likes to call axis deer a poor man’s elk hunt, it’s more affordable but just as fun. During the rut the stags are roaring and chasing doe all over the place, and it’s complete chaos. You can spot and stalk, you can sit over bait, but when it’s hot, a good waterhole is almost a guarantee of an opportunity, and that’s where Uncle Randy will be heading first.
There are only a few states with deer season open in September. That’s why Western Ranch Outfitters in South Dakota is Mike’s favorite place to hunt deer in September. South Dakota’s deer tags allow you to shoot either a mule deer or a whitetail, so it’s an “any deer” tag.
Iowa is basically the capital of Boone & Crocket whitetails. Mike’s hunted at Coal Camp Outfitters for years and taken some great deer. This year Jamie has a bow tag, so he heads to Iowa to take advantage of the rut action.
Mike Stroff is in Iowa at Coal Camp, where he’ll hunt some, but the main reason for the trip is to solidify a deal to lease the property, make plans for the spring, plant food plots and learn the property a little bit better.
One of Mike’s favorite times to hunt deer in Texas is early October. The bucks are still in very consistent feed and water patterns, and they haven’t had any pressure.
It’s game time. Mike puts down his bow and picks up his Savage rifle to put a big early season whitetail buck on the ground.
Colorado is known for great elk hunting. Summer is winding down and Mike is excited to get back hunting elk in the Rockies.
Farms were once prime habitats for wildlife, but with the efficiency of modern farm equipment less and less gets left behind for them every year. Not at Grigsby Farm in Illinois, they use regenerative farming practices that are beneficial for all their crops and the wildlife on the farm.
It’s November in Illinois and the rut is finally here at Grigsby Farm. The bucks are out chasing does and there are rubs and scrapes everywhere!
It’s winter in Texas and Mike is back home for some late November, early December action.
This week we’re in South Dakota hunting mule deer with Western Ranch Outfitters.
It’s finally here, shotgun season at the Grigsby and it doesn’t get any better when it comes to whitetail hunting.
